Invisalign vs. Braces

Invisalign vs. Braces

Everyone’s asking this question and when it comes down to it, Invisalign is the most unique approach that has come along and challenged the conventional orthodontics of metal braces.

First: Procedure

When comparing the two you’ll probably find the most obvious comparisons to be between the actual procedures. The material used for each orthodontic treatment is completely different. Traditional metal braces are entirely metal appliances, from the brackets and wires to the spacers and hooks. They also use rubber ligaments to hold the wires in place. Many a person has lived through years of these appliances being adjusted monthly and has dealt with the damage that can be done by the points and edges of the metal parts to the soft tissues of the mouth.

The Invisalign trays are carefully customized to the needs of the patient’s teeth. From the beginning to the desired end, technology has allowed Invisalign to use comfort and sophistication. Trays made of patented thermoplastic are shaped to apply a focused pressure to the teeth, moving them ever so slightly. Every two weeks the smooth plastic trays are traded out by the patient. Appointments and check-ups with the dentist are only necessary every six weeks or so.

Though when comparing Invisalign vs. braces the procedure is much more appealing, it is important to also include the knowledge that traditional metal brackets and wires remain the most durable and therefore the fastest method for correction of severe orthodontic problems. This is why there are still cases where a patient must first have metal braces for correction first, and then invisible braces can be brought in after the initial work is done.

Second: Convenience

This is most likely your next question, and yes, it’s a good one. When it comes to Invisalign trays, are they really as great as they’re reported to be? If debating the two then the answer is probably a straight up yes. Invisalign are removable, which makes eating, dental hygiene, and of course, personal confidence much greater in comparison to the metal braces that stretch across your smile.

Unlike Invisalign, conventional braces have many rules and limitations. A patient with metal brackets must avoid anything hard, sticky, sugary or acidic. This is not only because certain foods might damage the brackets but also because the wires and brackets can trap debris and substances against the teeth. Because traditional braces cannot be removed, the teeth can not be sufficiently cleaned, so these foods must be avoided.

Third: Pain

Many people are initially told that Invisalign does not cause pain at all, just some serious pressure. While this is probably scientifically correct, most patients report severe aches and pains when they first apply new trays. The same pain is experienced with metal braces. Most patients report that their teeth get used to the pressure after a couple days and they can continue on with no serious pain.

But, when it comes to additional pains and inconveniences, braces can cause serious pain. The wires and brackets are known to cut up the soft tissues of the mouth. Most patients will carry wax with them to apply to the edges that are accosting them. Invisalign trays are smooth and do not cause damage to the mouth, making them far more comfortable than conventional braces.

Fourth: Cost

Invisalign claims their procedure costs roughly the same as any traditional procedure. Many orthodontists will advise that traditional braces are cheaper, especially with insurance. The cost of an Invisalign treatment is determined by the number of trays necessary, the number of appointments and of course the time required to complete the procedure. While these variables can all easily climb, traditional braces hold to some of the same variables, though materials are cheaper.
